The so-called "Flying rivers" are atmospheric waterways that rise from the Amazon rainforest and supply rain for Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina. This natural phenomenon is threatened as more and more rainforest is deforested. If the rainforest disappears, the "flying rivers" will dry up, with severe consequences for Brazil and the global climate.

The GIZ Water and Sanitation Sector Programme PROSECEAU aims to provide poor households in urban and rural areas with safe and clean drinking water and sanitation in Burundi. The project intervenes in three main areas: water quality protection, performance improvement of the national water service provider, and drinking water access in rural areas. This video explains these three objectives in detail.

The GIZ Water and Sanitation Sector Programme of Burundi (PROSECEAU) implements activities to protect water catchments paired with the promotion of behavioural changes in basic sanitation and hygiene at household level. This short film introduces some of the highlights of PROSECEAU’s involvement in Burundi from 2016 to 2020 to improve the quality of drinking water, giving a voice to institutional partners, beneficiary households and other development agents.

The project aims to reduce emissions from Indonesia’s peatland and mangrove regions as well as the livelihoods in rural communities.

Jordan is one of the most water-scarce countries in the world and severely affected by climate change and refugee influx. GIZ implemented a holistic decentralized wastewater management system in the Dana biosphere reserve to prevent groundwater pollution, use effluent for irrigation and generate biogas for cooking.

In 2019, 27% of Cambodian schools had no water service, 38% had no sanitation service and 47% had no hygiene service. These deficits have major implications for children’s health, educational attainment and overall well-being. Access to safe drinking water, clean and functional toilets, and handwashing facilities not only minimize the potential for disease transmission, but also improve the learning environment and addresses issues of dignity and privacy.

Access to water, sanitation chain, financing, information systems, implementing actors, and sector frameworks are all key to scaling up water and sanitation in Kenya. The Water Sector Trust Fund (WSTF) actively participates in scaling-up water and sanitation access in low-income areas like Kenya.

Keki Adikhari, a well-known Nepalese actress with more than 1.5 million followers on social media wants to find out how far Nepal has come in the fight against menstrual taboos and restrictions. She takes the viewer on a journey to the far west of the country where she visits a school and a village in a rural area to learn what has changed in girls’ and women’s daily lives – and what still needs to be done to ensure that every girl has access to menstrual hygiene and education.

In the second film Keki Adikhari aims to find out how all the progress Nepal is making in menstrual health can be sustained in the future. She speaks with experts at a meeting of the Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management Partners Alliance in Kathmandu and attends a workshop for girls where she explores how destigmatizing menstrual health can empower women and girls in Nepal.

The project Sanitation for Millions builds and renovates safely managed and inclusive sanitation facilities in schools, medical centers and religious institutions. In addition, the project trains local staff to maintain the facilities themselves, thus ensuring the sustainability of the measures. In particular, this video presents activities of the Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) in Pakistan.

In addition, the project trains local staff to maintain the facilities themselves, thus ensuring the sustainability of the measures. This video in particular presents project activities in Pakistan.

Addressing environmental degradation from human activities such as charcoal burning through Integrated Watershed Management is key to restoring and protecting water resources and improving the livelihood of smallholder farmers in Zambia’s Lower Kafue Sub-Catchment. This short film provides a first-hand experience to catchment protection that the EU and BMZ funded AWARE Project has conducted through Integrated Watershed Management in partnership with the Zambian government, local Water Users Associations and communities at two pilot sites.

Through the AWARE programme, GIZ supports the Zambian Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA) to communicate the need for sustainable water resources management and agricultural water use efficiency.

The Lake Chad Basin Commission connects 450 stakeholders (regional representatives from agriculture, civil society and advisors to government agencies) on the challenge of climate change adaptation. Since 2015, approximately 14,180 inhabitants have benefited from activities on good agricultural practices for adaptation to climate change. By 2022, a total of more than 30,000 inhabitants will be reached.

This video presents a demonstration project of the Nexus Regional Dialogue in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), co-financed by the European Commission and the Federal Ministry for Economic Development and Cooperation. Bringing together ancestral water sources with solar power, crops and livestock, the project seeks to build food security and prosperity in San Pedro de Casta, Peru, through a practical demonstration of the water, energy and food security (WEF) Nexus approach.

Lake Kivu and Rusizi river basin is one of the African Great Lakes and is shared between Burundi, and Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Rwanda. Even though it is the main source of livelihood for the neighboring communities, Lake Kivu and Ruzizi River Basin have faced multiple challenges relating to the unsustainable use of water resources and the lack of integrated management. Explanatory video of the Water Energy Food Nexus. Sectoral planning in the water, energy and agricultural sectors can lead to unintended, negative consequences, which in turn worsens livelihoods and undermines sustainable development. Today's resource governance is insufficiently steered towards achieving a balanced water, food and energy security for humankind. The WEF Nexus approach highlights the interdependencies between achieving water, energy and food security for human well-being. 

Together with its regional partners, the Nexus Regional Dialogues Programme assists stakeholders to bring the WEF Nexus approach to the mainstream of governance and investment. Concrete policy recommendations and governance frameworks for an integrated natural resource management are developed. Furthermore, investment opportunities for multi-sectoral projects are identified. In order to complement this work with evidence-based arguments, the programme contributes to the operationalization and impact assessment of WEF Nexus demonstration projects in the regions.

The Frexus project (2019-2023) has been designed to support the peaceful resolution of social tensions and conflicts between population groups, caused or exacerbated by climate change in fragile areas. The project uses a Water-Energy-Food Security (WEF) Nexus approach to create and promote new opportunities for long-term sustainable development and peace. The invervention zones are: Mali (Bellen, Konna and Soboundou communes); Niger (rural communes of Falmey, Farrey and Sambéra); Chad (communes of Mao, Nokou and Mondo).

The Niger basin provides drinking water, hydropower generation, irrigated agriculture, cattle breeding, fishing and transportation – making it the élan vital of the nine riparian countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Mali, Niger and Nigeria – all part of the Niger Basin Authority (NBA) River Basin Organisation.

The Nexus Regional Dialogue in the Niger Basin worked with the NBA to developed and adopt of WEFE Nexus guidelines with the aim of institutionalising the WEF Nexus approach in national and regional governance structures.

In the region of Kollo, Niger, a group of 200 women have benefited from a Californian irrigation system using solar pumping enabling the cooperative to double their agricultural production, increase their income and ensure the sustainability of their production and their access to markets.

The Frexus project (2019-2023) has been designed to support the peaceful resolution of social tensions and conflicts between population groups, caused or exacerbated by climate change in fragile areas through the WEF Nexus approach. This is the success story of Hamadou Amadou based in the Dosso Region of Niger.
