Lake Kivu and Rusizi river basin is one of the African Great Lakes and is shared between Burundi, and Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Rwanda. Even though it is the main source of livelihood for the neighboring communities, Lake Kivu and Ruzizi River Basin have faced multiple challenges relating to the unsustainable use of water resources and the lack of integrated management. Explanatory video of the Water Energy Food Nexus. Sectoral planning in the water, energy and agricultural sectors can lead to unintended, negative consequences, which in turn worsens livelihoods and undermines sustainable development. Today's resource governance is insufficiently steered towards achieving a balanced water, food and energy security for humankind. The WEF Nexus approach highlights the interdependencies between achieving water, energy and food security for human well-being. 

Together with its regional partners, the Nexus Regional Dialogues Programme assists stakeholders to bring the WEF Nexus approach to the mainstream of governance and investment. Concrete policy recommendations and governance frameworks for an integrated natural resource management are developed. Furthermore, investment opportunities for multi-sectoral projects are identified. In order to complement this work with evidence-based arguments, the programme contributes to the operationalization and impact assessment of WEF Nexus demonstration projects in the regions.

The Niger basin provides drinking water, hydropower generation, irrigated agriculture, cattle breeding, fishing and transportation – making it the élan vital of the nine riparian countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Mali, Niger and Nigeria – all part of the Niger Basin Authority (NBA) River Basin Organisation.

The Nexus Regional Dialogue in the Niger Basin worked with the NBA to developed and adopt of WEFE Nexus guidelines with the aim of institutionalising the WEF Nexus approach in national and regional governance structures.
